Sir: Your article concerning antenatal screening for Down's syndrome, and the medical profession in general, assumes that the only 'treatment' for foetal abnormality such as Down's syndrome is abortion.
I am truly thankful that my first child, who has Down's syndrome, was not detected antenatally, as I fear, in my ignorance, I may have been guided towards termination of my pregnancy. I would then have been denied one of the most rewarding and happy experiences of my life, and, at the same time, snuffed out a young life both rich in value and full of potential.
Yours faithfully,
