NO, MUSIC is not dead. Geoffrey Wheatcroft hardly considers the possible merits of "popular" or jazz music yet it is artificial to draw boundaries between different and equally valid styles. Why is music almost unique in the art world in maintaining an uncrossable frontier between popular and "intellectual" forms? Andy Warhol and Jane Austen are not dismissed by sophisticated critics simply for being enjoyed by less educated people.
