ADRIAN READ (Letters, 16 January) says that people who reject religion 'degenerate into 'moral pygmies' ', quoting Albert Einstein. Einstein rejected supernatural belief; what he meant by 'religion' was reverence for the mystery of the universe and for the sanctity of life: 'In this sense, and in this alone, I am a deeply religious man.' What he meant by 'God' was the principle of order in the universe. Far from being religious, he was an honorary associate of the Rationalist Press Association, which in 1940 published an edition of his book The World As I See It.
