From Ms Helen Keats Sir: As someone who attends meetings in the conference room of the Murray building at Southampton University, I write regarding your article on the removal of three paintings of nudes from the room.
To me, the issue is not the objectification of nude women in art but the appropriateness of hanging the pictures in a conference room. As a visitor to the university, I felt distinctly uncomfortable with the paintings.
I would have felt the same way had the university hung up a copy of the Athena poster, much discussed on these pages recently, of the female tennis player who has unaccountably forgotten her knickers. Both are out of context.
Yours faithfully, Helen Keats Housing Initiatives Manager, Housing Service City of Portsmouth Portsmouth 8 February
