Sir: In 1957 I presented a series on television dealing with 'facts and figures'. One of our items showed how the population of the world could be given standing room on the Isle of Wight, allowing 1sq ft per person.
John Horsnell (letter, 7 January) now tells us that the area of the Isle of Wight is about 4.1 billion sq ft. So, at some time since 1957, the exercise of assembling the world's population there with 1sq ft each has become impossible. Yours etc,
