Letter: My violent childhood made me 'hard' enough to murder
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.I WAS interested to read the quote from Golding's Lord of the Flies in Geraldine Bedell's article. 'Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy'.
'Piggy' symbolises the human capacity for reason or rational thinking, and therefore the ability to make moral judgements.
Not all the boys in Lord of the Flies became (or reverted to) savages. Ralph and Piggy were the voices of reason to the end - their 'adult tapes', their inner voices of parental and other authoritative models, were strong enough to keep 'playing' to the end. For France Soir's headlines to scream 'These two monsters could have been your children' is dangerous as well as untrue.
All parents who are responsible, caring and good will seldom, if ever, produce a monster - a child who can kill another child.
