Sir: James Fenton's fascinating study of Michael Portillo (7 February) omits one point which should be the concern of all politicians: was it not Sigmund Freud who claimed that slips of the tongue in off-the-cuff speeches reveal more clearly what we really believe than speeches consciously drafted with a quite different intention?
