Letter: In the dark at Heathrow as the IRA's mortars 'fail'

Sir: Today I heard about the third attempt by the IRA to cause disruption at Heathrow airport. Yesterday I played football for an Irish football club based in Paris which has a multinational following and players (Irish, British, French, and others). We all share an interest in Ireland and are both disappointed by the latest outrages and very relieved that there have been no casualties.

I was amazed to hear that the IRA believes the British peace initiative conveys a 'negative attitude'. All peace initiatives are positive, by definition. If it is dissatisfied with the British stance, the IRA should produce its own alternative and realistic peace initiative.

Yours,

PAUL LUSHEY
