Your support makes all the difference.Sir: While I agree with John Charman (letter, 27 April) that maintaining public safety should be the first priority, I see no justification for the introduction of identity cards.
It would be extremely difficult to produce identity cards that were beyond the resources of the IRA and similar organisations to forge. Even if feasible, it would be prohibitively expensive.
One thing you can be sure about any competent terrorist is that their papers will be in order.
Every infringement of civil liberties that terrorists force on us is a victory for the terrorist. To impose an ineffective measure is an own goal.
