From Mrs Jennifer Miller Sir: Mark Lawson criticises the Queen's Christmas message as out of touch (comment, 27 December), when in fact her themes were echoed in your Boxing Day resume: "1994: moments that made the year", which mentioned the possible resolution of what had previously seemed irresoluble conflicts, hopes of peace in the Middle East and Northern Ireland, and the political achievement in South Africa.

As for Ken Livingstone saying Her Majesty's speech is boring, how many watch broadcasts on behalf of his own or any other political party? Television audiences are declining in general, and the most popular Christmas Day programme after the Queen's Speech, East Enders, also lost 2 million viewers compared to last year.
