Letter: Hated statues for the demolition list

Sir: In the event of the application for the demolition of the Duke of Sutherland's statue above Golspie being successful (report, 4 October), an interesting precedent will be established for the removal of statues to persons who do not deserve the honour.

Should this come about, I would like to nominate for demolition Earl Haig's statue in Whitehall, for reasons which will be known to any reader familiar with the history of the First World War. In his place I would substitute a monument to Sir Joseph Bazalgette (who built London's drainage system), who did so much more for humanity. The life-sized bust of Bazalgette on the Embankment does not do justice to the man's achievements.

Yours faithfully,

JOHN GOLDSMITH

London, SE25
