Sir: The accusations of fraud, over- centralisation and a catalogue of crimes, levelled with suspicious relish by Michael Heseltine and Douglas Hurd against Europe, would seem to be more accurately directed against their own government than to the European Union, which has not perpetrated such a fraud as winning an election on the basis of false tax promises.
And Mr Hurd is skating on microscopically thin ice in reminding us that the EU derives its legitimacy from its electors since his party consistently fights against giving the democratically-elected European Parliament sufficient power to represent us effectively.
Yours faithfully,
DOUGLAS GARDNER
