Sir: I am no fan of the Government, but I cannot see how the Divorce Bill vote affects its standing. MPs were given a free vote not because of Tory "hostility" ("Divorce Bill threatened by rebel vote", 25 April), but to ensure that debate on such profound issues as divorce, abortion, hunting and capital punishment is kept to the principle at stake, and that they are not used as political footballs.
It is inappropriate to look upon the outcome of such a vote in terms of party political advantage, as some political observers (and, it appears, Tony Blair) seem to; and it reflects a creeping Americanisation of our political culture.
