Sir: Lucy Ward's dismissal of students who spend three years studying obscure Anglo-Saxon poems ("Pack a laptop and watch the bank balance", 24 July) is outdated. Today's Anglo-Saxonists are career-savvy computer literates who go on to lucrative jobs in law, accountancy, and journalism, while their scientist contemporaries struggle with debt, unemployment, and other perils brought on by insufficient understanding of Class I strong verbs.
