Sir: David Mellor describes his conduct as foolish. Did he get an opt-out clause on his wedding day to designate adultery as foolish, and does he regard the humiliation of his wife as foolish behaviour?

The dictionary describes 'foolish' as being weak in intellect, wanting discretion, unwise, ridiculous, marked with folly.

In putting blame on newspapers, which do not stay in business unless they reflect the opinions of their readers, he might consider that perhaps these characteristics are not what the readers of the newspapers choose to have in their leaders.
