LETTER: Conflict over cyclists and pedestrians on the canal towpath
From Ms Lisbeth David
Sir: That Steven Norris, an Under-Secretary of State for Transport, has become a committed cyclist is excellent news. May we hope that he will soon take the next step, and identify also with walkers? You report that he could not "understand the problem" of the cyclist/walker conflict. From where he was sitting on his saddle there was, of course, no problem. This is our problem.
Cyclists can't share; they snatch. Here in Cardiff, we had two splendid riverside footpaths. Both have now been officially appropriated for cyclists, the majority of whom have no bells and no consideration for people on foot. The Taff Trail - a brilliant concept - is, in this part of Wales at least, a footpath only for the fit, nippy and nerveless. The rest of us stay at home.
Why couldn't we have one side each?
Yours faithfully,
Lisbeth David
