Your support makes all the difference.Sir: I write as a Fellow of Rewley House, Oxford, shortly to become Kellogg College, with regard to your leading article of 30 June about college names. The relationship between colleges and those who have used their wealth to help others through higher education is, as you note, a historic and beneficial association.
Mr W. K. Kellogg was a man whose foresight and commitment has changed more than just the world's breakfast table. Since its inception in 1930, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, one of the largest in America, has followed his dictum, 'I'll use my money to help people', by supporting the education of mature and non-traditional students throughout the world. It has also made possible a large number of programmes addressing environmental, social and health care issues.
The generosity the foundation has shown to the college and to the associated Department of Continuing Education at Oxford over the past 30 years has helped to expand provision of educational opportunities for part-time and non-traditional students. Moreover, it has given money to support the needs of continuing education without regard for publicity. It was in the light of this that the Fellows voted unanimously to express their gratitude to the foundation by taking the name of Kellogg College.
