Letter: Clark show goes on

Sir: While Mr Justice Lightman's decision in the Alan Clark diaries case is surprising, it is unlikely to form much of a precedent (leader, 22 January). It is based very much on the particular facts of the case. Future parodists have little to fear.

Max Hastings, editor of the London Evening Standard, could have stopped the case in its tracks by changing the style of the Standard's column, as he has now been ordered to do. That he chose not to is a tribute to his generosity: not just to the legal profession but to the public at large by allowing us all to enjoy a further episode of the great public entertainment that is the life of Alan Clark.
