Sir: Roger Bell implies that all bridleways are open to motor vehicles ("Why go on all fours?", 25 January). Bridleways are legally open only to horses, pedal cycles and pedestrians. Even horsedrawn vehicles are banned unless given permission by the landowner. Motor vehicles are legally permitted on unclassified roads and "byways open to all traffic".
