Your support makes all the difference.Sir: You report (19 September) on the problems facing John Prescott as he seeks to reduce car usage and increase the take-up of public transport. There is one option you did not discuss. Simply reintroduce the blanket 50 miles per hour speed limit for all roads. This will reduce CO2 production as cars are more fuel-efficient at 50 than at 70; discourage the purchase of large, powerful cars as their performance "advantages" are nullified, and encourage the use of public transport as journey times are slightly increased and hence alternatives become more attractive.
