Sir: The debate on the purchase of Churchill's papers seems to concentrate mainly on details such as the price and whether this is a proper use of Lottery money. One assertion has been left unchallenged: that it would be a Bad Thing if the archive were not bought by the state. Who says? If some American foundation wants to buy all or part of it, why should we object? It's not as if anyone will pay millions and then destroy it.
Our own museums are full of other countries' treasures (not all of which were paid for). We should not begrudge foreigners a chance to buy some of ours.
