Today it has been reported that David Bolam, a British teacher who was held hostage by militants in Libya, has been released.

His release is believed to have been secured through the payment of ransom, according to a BBC report. However, the Foreign Office has declined to comment on this.

Either way, a debate is starting to develop around the UK's policy on hostages. And with the recent murder of Alan Henning at the hands of Isis, it is likely to continue.
