From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

So Pharrell has 2013 firmly in his back-pocket. He's up for 7 Grammys in total - one for 'Producer of the Year', two for 'Album of the Year' (on Kendrick Lamar's 'Good Kid, M.A.A.D city' and Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories') and a further two for 'Record of the Year' - the ubiquitous 'Get Lucky' and controversial dance-floor filler 'Blurred Lines'.

All well and good, and we heartily congratulate Mr Williams on the bumper crop of nominations. He deserves at least six of them. But the Pharrell-ification of this year's sound goes on -

The former N.E.R.D frontman also produced parts of the album BEYONCÉ, released without warning by Mrs Knowles-Carter earlier today.

Almost certain to top the charts, if Pharrell has any tendency towards megalomania, he's sure to come a cropper now - back in June, with 'Blurred Lines' and 'Get Lucky' holding up the Billboard Hot 100, the 40-year-old became only the 12th artist ever to simultaneously hold the number 1 and 2 positions.

But what to do if - musically, personally, spiritually - you don't see eye-to-eye with Pharrell? Well, here are five great album - selected out of several hats, none of which are owned by Pharrell -you can bring in the year with:

1. Blood Orange - It is What it is (Cupid Deluxe)

It's catchy, and no sight of any former Neptunes whatsoever.

2. Haim - Falling (Days Gone By)

A number one album. No Pharrell.

3. Drake – Tuscan Leather (Nothing was the Same)

Not only does Pharrell not appear on this album, Drake didn't tour with him either.

4. The Range - Metal Swing (Non-Fiction)

A debut from producer James Hinton, who hasn’t knowingly collaborated with the kingmaker.

5. DARKSIDE - The Only Shrine I've Seen (Psychic)

The depressingly-young Nicolas Jaar (23) making another hit, without Pharrell

Please suggest your own Pharrell-free hits below the line...
