Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Relations between Britain and Russia seemed to be about as bad as they could be, even before the Russians threatened to cancel a major art exhibition due to open at the Royal Academy next month. The Russians said they wanted a cast-iron guarantee that none of the masterpieces coming to London risked being impounded by legal action. The British interpreted the threat as a continuation of all the existing disputes by other means.

It now seems that the threat has been lifted. The Culture Secretary, James Purnell, has undertaken to push through the legislation the Russians asked for. The Russians have accepted his good faith. The show promises to be a feast for art-lovers. If the go-ahead also signals a mutual recognition that relations between our two countries should not be allowed to get worse, that is to be welcomed. This is one area where a dose of old-fashioned seasonal spirit would not come at all amiss.
