Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Labour will decide today whether to accept Ken Livingstone's application to return to the party he abandoned to win election as Mayor of London. But why would Labour want its erstwhile enfant terrible back in the fold? And, indeed, why would Mr Livingstone wish to return to the party that worked so tirelessly to withhold from him its imprimatur as its candidate for the mayoralty? The answer is, of course, the same in both cases: electoral convenience. Labour and Mr Livingstone both want to win the next London mayoral election, due to be held in May 2004, and joining forces once more would strengthen both their chances. But Mr Livingstone has proved to be a disappointment as Mayor, and Labour is better off without him. There is still time for Mr Livingstone to prove his worth to Londoners, but he should do so by his actions, not by cynically joining a party that has left him behind.
