Cross with care
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Much crossness at the Vatican, we note, over the fashion among celebrities for wearing golden, diamond-studded crucifixes. Various stars find themselves anathematised, accused of flaunting a Christian symbol costing large sums of money while forgetting the plight of the poor.

We have difficulty in rising to such a state of exercise, recalling, for example, the rather more robust attitude of the Founder, who showed notable sympathy for the louche and their ilk. It is undeniable, too, that the Founding Fathers knew the value of a potent proselytising symbol. And that's before we go on to make the usual cheap point about the Vatican treasures.
Moreover, as they mingle amid the glister and the hurly of the flashbulb and the canapé, who is to say that the eye of Naomi, Catherine Zeta, or even P Diddy might not suddenly fall upon their glittering accessory and epiphany result? Many a good saint has got a start in similar circumstance; we can but pray.
