Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

From Mr Gerald Mark Kandler

Sir: It is a sad indictment of our society that, in the same week as Brian Appleyard writes an excellent article concerning the spiritual bankruptcy of our money-worshipping culture ("Money makes the world go away", 14 June), and on the same day that it is reported that pounds 450m has been wasted on an unnecessary road in London's Docklands (report, 16 June), you defend the dumping at sea of the Brent Spar on the basis that it will save a multinational company pounds 34m ("Greenpeace, right or wrong"; leading article, 16 June).

Do you not see the irony in this, or can such potential damage always be passed off on monetary grounds? The extension of your argument is that to save relatively little money, all environmental pollution and damage are acceptable so long as profits are preserved.

Yours faithfully,

GERALD MARK KANDLER
