We’re having to clear more space in next Saturday’s i, the 1,000th, for your thoughts on the paper and what you would like us to improve. Those who have written so far include Chloe Brewster, 15, from Kent, who has been a reader for more than three years, and has been inspired to pursue a career in journalism. Jeanne Preston, 93, likes the “concise, unbiased news and good arts coverage”.
I keep a big “Readers” file on my desk containing hundreds of emails from you: ideas, criticism. And we also have demographic research about who you are and what you say you like about i. But we want to develop this, so we are launching a sort of readers’ panel for people who take i (or our sister titles The Independent and The Independent on Sunday) to allow any of you to tell us in a more methodical fashion what you think of the paper. It’s another opportunity to help shape our future editorial direction.
When do you read i, and why? What are your favourite sections and writers? Which causes concern you most? What’s your greatest annoyance? Which front pages do you admire and dislike? Are there any issues or countries you would like to read more about? What would you like to change about society?
One of my colleagues, Adam Joseph, our Strategic Insights Manager, gathers together the wider market research. He has quietly built the website indyViews.org, where a quick sign-up allows you to join our reader panel. As a member you can complete occasional surveys at your convenience, with opportunities to collect rewards for participation. There’s the option, too, to complete surveys for selected third parties to help meet the panel’s overheads if you want to.
