i Editor's Letter: New and improved arts and entertainment coverage
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.
i was born as the antidote to the glossy towers of newsprint that burst out of Britain’s recycling boxes. One of our first adverts showed former Editor-in-Chief Simon casting off his natural shyness to star as Kelner-Scissorhands, chopping up a mound of other titles to find the best bits for i. Cue voiceover: “It’s what goes into a paper that makes it intelligent. It’s what’s kept out that makes it clever.”
Continuing in the same spirit, this Friday we offer you improved coverage of the arts and entertainment, albeit in a familiar concise style. The section will be called, cunningly, Friday. Whether going out or staying in’s your thing, it will bring you a slice of cultural life. You asked for a television column; our critic Ellen E Jones will oblige. Deputy arts editor Alice Jones, an Edinburgh judge, will sink her teeth into comedy. Elisa Bray will write on rock and pop, Luke Blackall will bring us news from behind the scenes. We’ll carry film and music interviews and all the best new releases. The Food pages will move to another day, leaving me only to apologise to fans of leopard-print interior decoration: RIP Friday Style.

i is an unusually broad church – its readership is genuinely national and as well as an older audience we have a huge constituency among under-35s, including school and university students. Good luck, then, to i’s energetic new student ambassadors, who have begun their work on 20 university campuses in England, Scotland and Wales, promoting the paper and contributing to our journalism. The student iQuiz returns next month.
