Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

1. Helpful Waitress Asks Recently Seated Couple If They’ve Eaten Food Before. The Onion.

2. Opinion polls in 16 Scottish constituencies published by Michael Ashcroft today. Of the 14 Labour seats (in which the Yes vote did well in the referendum), Labour would lose all but Willie Bain’s Glasgow North East. It is hard to extrapolate from this sample but it is in line with all-Scotland polls suggesting the SNP would more or less sweep the board. Not good for Ed Miliband.

3. Thanks to Paul B for soothing the pain of the Seahawks’ defeat in the Super Bowl with early nominees for my next crop of names of American footballers:

Quinterrius Eatmon

Thurston Armbrister

Tra’Mayne Bondurant

Za’Darius Smith

Deshazor Everett

David Mills added Quandre Diggs.

4. Quotation of the Day from Norman Baker, the Liberal Democrat MP, speaking on BBC Daily Politics about Prince Charles: “I agree with what he says, but I disagree with his right to say it.”

James Hanning and I wrote for The Independent on Sunday about Charles’s restless activism and the constitutional headaches it was causing.

5. Most grateful to General Boles for putting my comment about the Charlatans’ new album, which is indeed superb, on a poster for them:

________

6. And finally, thanks to Dave Gorman for this:

“Who’s my second favourite Knowles sister? And what do I need to buy for the aquarium? Easy. Solange. And tanks for all the fish.”
