Daily catch-up: Latest instalment of Genuine Shop Names
A round-up of what is really important, from the high streets of the United Kingdom and the world
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A remarkable contribution to my series of Genuine Shop Names, the Thaitanic II in Belfast, thanks to Allison Morris. It is the Roman number II that lifts it into the "really quite special" class, outdoing Thailander in Edinburgh (below, thanks to Alan Robertson).
While in Edinburgh, you could stop for a wager at what the superstitious refer to only as "the Scottish bookies". Thanks to Mike Brook:
I recently had the Marquis de Salade in Brussels. Since when they have been coming in thick and fast. Here is Athlete's Foot, courtesy of Tony Agotha:
Will Green draws my attention to a hairdresser in New Cross Gate, south London, called Top Knotch:
And finally, back to Edinburgh. This is no doubt well known there, but I didn't know it. I said on Twitter that I had heard there was a sign in a coffee shop in Ediburgh that said: "JK Rowling never wrote here." She replied to say: "There is. I went and wrote in there just to spite them." And here it is, in Artisan Roast on Broughton Street (thanks to Ardit Haliti for the photo):
If you zoom in you can see she has added: "And I never will – JK Rowling."
