From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A video of a number of rail passengers falling onto the tracks after a night out has been released by British Transport Police (BTP) in the hope of warning others not to drink too much over the festive period.

Staggering along the platform the people then tumble off, potentially putting themselves into the path of trains.

Pointing out that 21 people have died in alcohol-related incidents on station platforms in the last 10 years, BTP said it wanted to highlight that the railway and alcohol can be a dangerous mix.

As a result they are teaming up with Network Rail this Christmas to encourage people to ensure their friends get on their trains safely.

Advice being given to potentially-intoxicated passengers includes:

  • Standing back from the platform edge, behind the yellow line

  • Holding onto the handrail on stairs and escalators

  • Walking – not running

  • Texting British Transport Police on 61016 to report an incident
