England fans gather in Australia to watch Lionesses win World Cup opener
England fans who have travelled to Australia gathered on Saturday to watch Sarina Wiegman’s side kick-off their World Cup campaign down under.
The Lionesses beat Haiti 1-0 at Suncorp Stadium, thanks to Georgia Stanway’s retaken penalty on the half-hour mark.
It was not the decisive victory most had predicted for the European champions and world’s number-four side against a team 49 places below them in the FIFA rankings.
Haiti came close to levelling more than once, including a late second-half chance denied at the last by Mary Earps’ outstretched foot.
England face Denmark in their next group game.
