Gareth Southgate motivated by England fan criticism, says John Stones

Criticism of Gareth Southgate will only “motivate” the England boss, John Stones has said.

The Three Lions have struggled at Euro 2024 this summer and despite reaching the quarter-finals, Southgate has faced questions over his tactics and team selection.

A minority of frustrated fans even launched beer cups towards him from stands after England’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia last week.

“I saw some fans after one game throwing bottles in his direction, I’m sure that will have only motivated him that more,” Stones said of the England boss, ahead of the quarter-final against Switzerland.

He added that the players are focused on winning the tournament for Southgate, themselves and “everyone” at home.
