Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, is holding a briefing with journalists on Tuesday.

She is taking questions on the same afternoon that president Joe Biden held a high-stakes phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Washington hopes to avert a crisis on the Ukrainian border, but has made it clear the US is prepared to hit Russia with “nuclear economic sanctions” if it does invade Ukraine.
