Video shows climbers on rim of erupting volcano run for their lives
Climbers ran for their lives and had to slide down a volcano in Indonesia as it erupted while they reached its crater, terrifying video from 17 August shows.
The group were trekking to the top of Dukono, an active volcano on Halmahera island, despite warnings to stay within a 1.8-mile safe zone.
Drone footage shows a huge dust cloud emerging from the 1,335-metre-tall volcano as the climbers appeared at the edge of the crater.
No injuries were reported.
Muhammad Reza, who filmed the scenes, said: “Climbers should not force for the summit climb when the situation is not possible.
“Don’t forget, reaching the peak is a bonus. Getting home safely is the real purpose of the hike.”
