Sunken WWII ‘ghost ships’ brought to surface of ocean after underwater volcano erupts
Sunken “ghost ships” from the Second World War have been brought to the surface of the Pacific Ocean after underwater volcano eruptions close to Japan’s Ogasawara Islands.
The vessels - dating back to the 1940s - lie south of Tokyo close to the island of Iwo Jima and have resurfaced after Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano eruptions formed a new island.
Footage shows the remains of 24 ships that were deliberately sunk after the Battle of Iwo Jima (1945) washed up on the shore, almost eight decades later.
