Republican lawmaker opposes free school meals, says he’s never met a hungry Minnesotan
A Republican senator defended voting against legislation providing free school meals in Minnesota as he had never met anyone in the state who was hungry.
On the floor of the state Senate, Steve Drazkowski said that hunger was a "relative term."
According to Democratic senator Heather Gustafson, the lead author of a bill that makes lunch and breakfast free for school students, one in six children in Minnesota are considered “food insecure”, meaning they don’t know when they will get their next meal.
