Infrared satellite shows ‘extremely dangerous’ Hurricane Otis making landfall in Mexico

Satellite imagery has captured “extremely dangerous” Category 5 Hurricane Otis as it makes landfall in Mexico on Wednesday.

The hurricane has rapidly intensified over the last couple of hours with wind speeds of up to 165mph as it hits Mexico’s beach resort Acapulco, home to more than one million people.

The National Hurricane Centre has described a “nightmare scenario” with life-threatening coastal flooding expected.

There is also the risk of mudslides and power outages for weeks or months.

Acapulco’s mayor has warned Otis could be more devastating than Hurricane Pauline, which killed more than 200 people back in 1997.
