Gilgo Beach murders: Suspect Rex Heuermann and the story so far
Architect Rex Heuermann has been arrested on suspicion of being the notorious Long Island serial killer, who is thought to be responsible for a string of unsolved murders in Long Island over a decade ago.
The case first began in May 2010 with the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert. While searching for Shannan near Gilgo Beach, they eventually found the remains of 11 other victims.
Police believe the Long Island serial killer was brutally murdering young women and dumping their bodies along Gilgo Beach.
After 13 years, police named and arrested Rex Heuermann on suspicion of murdering Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello.
Police say they identified Heuermann thanks to a stash of burner phones and DNA from a discarded pizza crust.
While Mr Heuermann has pleaded not guilty, it turns out he has ties to Las Vegas and South Carolina.
Law enforcement is now looking into a link between Heuermann and other unsolved missing persons and murder cases across the country.
Investigators believe suspect Rex Heuermann killed the victims in his family home.
