Second World War bomb destroyed in huge explosion after homes evacuated
A Second World War-era bomb exploded in a controlled blast on Wednesday, 21 August, in Northern Ireland.
More than 400 homes were evacuated in the Rivenwood area of Newtownards since the device was discovered last Thursday.
Police confirmed that the device was an air-dropped German bomb from the Second World War.
It was around 83 years old but still posed a significant risk to public safety, even after all this time, District Commander for Ards and North Down Superintendent Johnston McDowell said.
