Endangered North Atlantic right whale spotted nursing calf
An endangered North Atlantic right whale was spotted swimming in the sea off Massachusetts with a calf by her side.
Spindle, the 41-year-old marine mammal, was swimming in Cape Cod Bay with her 10th known offspring, who was nursing as it swam underneath its mother.
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) said that researchers have identified 12 live calves born this season.
According to WHOI, there are approximately 340 North Atlantic right whales left on the planet, with the species dying faster than they can reproduce, largely due to entanglements in fishing gear and collisions with boats and ships.
