Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

IT WAS the love letters of Leos Janacek (Weekend front page, 15 January) that set us thinking: what is so special about Norwich and Burma? Several of the composer's letters were headed 'Brno at night', a rather cunning fusion of Burma ('Be upstairs ready my angel') and Norwich ('Knickers off ready when I come home').

My classmates never wrote anything but Norwich or Burma on the end of letters to their loved ones. The pre-eminence of Norwich and Burma could be due to Alan Bennett, whose monologue on the subject considered the possible effect of the Bishop of Norwich signing his letters 'Norwich', and the dangers of a Burma sign-off when there is a man living upstairs.

But perhaps other towns and countries have been acronymed. Certainly the vocabulary of the British love letter needs to range more widely. So, with Valentine's Day looming, Weekend is offering a romantic Valentine's Day weekend for two in Norwich to the reader who sends in the best publishable acronym for one, or indeed all, of the following places: Erith, Todmorden, Namibia, Wales. The winner will enjoy a two-night half- board package for two at the three-star, riverside Nelson Hotel, to be taken any time in February.

Please send your suggestion, by 31 January, to: Frank Barrett (Norwich), The Independent, 40 City Road, London EC1Y 2DB. The winner will be announced on 5 February.
