Sweden and Finland

26-29 June. Polar Jazz and Blues Festival. With the longest days of the year the Arctic world goes into overdrive. This nordic jazz and blues event takes place simultaneously in Haparanda, Sweden and Tornea, Finland.

Cote d'Azur

28 June-27 October. Major art exhibition entitled, "La Cote d'Azur et la Modernite". Art galleries and museums along the Riviera are working together to show the diversity of artistic creativity in the area between 1918 and 1958.

Luxembourg

23 June. National Day. This festive occasion sees patriotic processions, religious services, concerts and dances. In the capital, which is floodlit at night, large crowds gather to watch Europe's smallest military parade.

Innsbruck

Austria 27 June-13 July. International Summer Dance Festival. Dance in all its variations is on display here, ranging from classical ballet to expressionist. Information is available on tel/fax 0043 512 362226.

Montreal

Canada, 26 June-7 July. International Jazz Festival, with lots of free, outdoor music and a delightfully urbane atmosphere. The whole of downtown Montreal gets transformed into a giant party for this, one of the leading jazz festivals of the world.

Faroe Islands

26 June-6 July. Festival of classical and contemporary music. These tiny islands in the north Atlantic are playing host to musicians from the Baltic and north Atlantic region, from Lithuania to the USA.

Denmark

26-29 June. At Roskilde, for the 27th year, the biggest four-day rock festival in Europe is taking place, alongside film, theatre, entertainment, creative workshops and a big atmosphere.

New Zealand

27 June-6 July. Montana Winterfest. Down in the southern hemisphere meanwhile, it is winter solstice. This festival in the Lake Taupo district which marks the opening of the ski season is celebrated with fun-filled wintry activities.
