Replenish yourself on a Jersey foodie break
Looking for fresh, locally sourced dishes served on seasonal menus? The largest of the Channel Islands really is a great place to take time out from the city this autumn
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. There are many ingredients to a great weekend away, and relaxation in a beautiful setting, accompanied by fine food and drink, is always top of the list. This autumn, Jersey is well-equipped to provide just that.
It may be close to home – nestled in a large bay in the English Channel within sight of the French coast – but that makes Jersey all the more alluring as a place to get away from it all without actually going very far. Jersey is also increasingly renowned for the quality of its cuisine, which means a foodie break is a great way of recharging your batteries.
Locally sourced cuisine
Where to eat once you arrive? Well, since autumn is one of the best times of the year for Jersey’s tastiest seasonal produce, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The island’s top restaurants all take their culinary cues from what they find around them, both in the sea and on land, which is one reason why Ormer (below), in the heart of the capital St Helier, and Ocean Restaurant, within the Atlantic Hotel overlooking St Ouen’s Bay, have been awarded Michelin stars. Both specialise in exquisite seafood dishes sourced from the surrounding waters.
And they’re not the only ones to take advantage of Jersey’s home-grown ingredients. Many restaurants offer seasonal menus to best show off the island’s produce, ensuring it’s enjoyed at the perfect time. This autumn, tomatoes, apples, pumpkins and fungi are all likely to be found in some of the more discerning chefs’ dishes.
The setting for a meal is always a bonus too. Somehow food seems so much more enjoyable when there’s a great view. At Jersey Crab Shack in St Brelade, for instance, you can gaze out over golden sands and lapping waves from your beachfront table.
But, whether you’re at a beach café or a five-star hotel, in Jersey you know your food hasn’t travelled too far to your plate.
Sourced on the shore
You’ll get a feel for just how far (and yet so close) Jersey is from your busy city life on land when you engage with its rugged natural surroundings. If you want to take your foodie experience to the next level, why not swap home-grown cuisine for home-gathered produce? Companies such as Wild Adventures Jersey offer coastal foraging walks to find, cook and eat your own shellfish, wild seaweed and other exotic delights.
Whether you want foodie fun, fine wine or simply dinner with a loved one, Jersey feels like a hidden jewel in the English Channel. Only 40 minutes from London by air, with flights from just £35 per person each way, it’s the ideal setting for that island break away from the stresses of city life that you’ve been promising yourself.
