It’s summer in Sussex, and of course that means it’s time for lots of weekend walkers to take to the South Downs, eager to find the next pub so they can rest their weary feet, With that in mind we thought we’d pick out a pub that is as welcome a sight to footsore walkers as it’s possible to get – the Tiger Inn, whose setting, on East Dene’s picture-perfect village green of flint-walled cottages, is about as idyllic as you can get, especially on sunny days, when drinkers spill out on to the green. It’s a popular lunchtime stop-off for walkers tramping along the South Downs Way at any time of year, which passes the fabulous pebbles-and-rockpools beach at nearby Birling Gap on its route along the Seven Sisters cliffs towards Beachy Head. Walkers even have a beer named in their honour – the award-winning Legless Rambler, one of several offerings from the local Beachy Head microbrewery, which has its brewery tap at the Tiger Inn. Food is standard pub grub (burgers, fish and chips, sausage and mash, ploughman's, and the like) – hearty, stomach-filling fare, usually with a veggie option that will more than set you up for the rest of your journey.
