Solomon’s Island, Cornwall

There's a good chance you won't have stayed anywhere quite like Solomon's Island, located deep in back of Cornwall’s beyond, nine miles up the coast from Land's End. Just outside the tiny hamlet of Morvah, it's not actually an island at all to be fair, just a uniquely remote holiday cottage high up on a hillside that commands views over as wild and remote a stretch of coast as you’ll find anywhere in England. The sun is key to any stay here, providing magnificent sunsets every evening, and power by way of a set of solar panels – Solomon’s Island is an entirely off-grid destination, and water comes from the cottage’s own bore hole. Inside is as welcoming and cosy as you like, with three bedrooms – one double, one twin and a large room for kids or friendly adults with three single beds – a sitting room with a wood-burning stove and a dining room with a Rayburn. There are great walks nearby too – strolling across over the fabulously named Woongumpus Common up to the megalithic tomb of Chûn Quoit and Iron Age hill fort of Chûn Castle, or making your way down to Portheras Cove, one of Cornwall's furthest-flung beaches. Or just sit in the garden and enjoy the cottage’s tranquil location. It’s a perfect place for green-minded families or groups of friends looking for an isolated bolthole.
