True or false
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Today, true; tomorrow, false. The brand-new terminal at Washington National opens with the first departure at 7am tomorrow. Cesar Pelli's striking construction, which includes an acre of glass overlooking runways and the city, has been built adjacent to the Metro station. So today's 20- minute hike to the station will be replaced with what the airport authority promises is a seven-minute stroll. Because the airport is so close in, passengers with hand luggage only can be in the heart of Washington within 15 minutes of landing; from Dulles the minimum journey time is an hour.
One problem is that the US Congress restricts flights to the new terminal - planes can travel a maximum of 1,250 miles. Even so, the city-centre- to-city centre journey to Washington DC is probably faster if you change planes in Boston or New York than if you fly direct.
