Q I am going to Zagreb in December. What is the best located hotel for the Christmas markets, please?

A The Croatian capital is a great city for short breaks, and during the Christmas market season it is particular appealing. Zagreb feels very festive in December, with markets popping up in various parts of the city centre. For that reason, there is no ideal location. As the capital is compact, it is simply a matter of finding the hotel that suits you best.

If you are after early 20th-century grandeur, the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel – with some impressive Art Nouveau features – is a good choice. The property is at the south of the city centre, adjacent to the rail station; it began life in 1925 as a grand hotel in the railway tradition, serving passengers on the Orient Express. Considering the opulence, the best online rates in December of €135 (£119) double (excluding breakfast) are pretty good.

Close to the capital’s hub, Ban Josip Jelacic Square, is the more intimate Hotel Jagerhorn. It dates from 1827 and claims to be the oldest hotel in the city. Bookings are heavy for December, but on some nights double rooms with breakfast are available for a reasonable €109 including breakfast.

Still too much? The Hotel Central isn’t exactly central but it is well situated and good value, at €65 double including breakfast.
