Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Too hot? Try a wet wet week

Lying just above the Tropic of Cancer, Florida offers no respite from London's heatwave. But cooling off in Orlando comes cheap with a seven-days-for-the-price-of-one ticket for the Watermania fun park, three miles from Disney World. The pounds 12 pass is available only in advance through TicketShop USA (081-995 8225); this agency can supply tickets for other Florida attractions.

Spanish shuttle

Heathrow to Madrid for pounds 84 return is one of the best high season air bargains. STA Travel (071-937 9921) is selling seats to the Spanish capital on Boeing 747s belonging to the South American carrier Aerolineas Argentinas. Two catches: flights are Mondays only, with a stop at Paris each way.

Happy hostelling

Londoners can now book a bed in youth hostels in Britain and around the world using Hostelling International's reservations network. You call in to any of the capital's seven hostels, or book at the YHA office at Southampton Street, Covent Garden, or Campus Travel at Grosvenor Gardens, Victoria.

Scandinavian treats

Flying in the Nordic countries is usually horribly expensive, but this summer two airlines have brought out airpasses that greatly cut the cost of travel from London. Transwede (0293 568812) is offering a pass which, for example, will take you from Gatwick to Gallivare (in the Arctic Circle) as well as Billund in Denmark (home of Legoland) and Stockholm for pounds 354. The Visit Baltic Airpass offered by SAS-Scandinavian Airlines (071-734 4020) allows flights around the region - Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Russian cities of Kaliningrad and St Petersburg. The price for two flights is pounds 145, and you can buy one or two extra flights at pounds 55 each. You have to pay pounds 150 for a Heathrow-Copenhagen return ticket.
